49th Biennial Texas State 2015 Convention

by Terrie Vacek

Day One, THURSDAY, April 9, 2015

Joy and anticipation filled the hallways and rooms of the Renaissance Austin Hotel, Austin, Texas, as delegates, clergy and guests registered for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA) 49th Biennial State Convention, April 9 through April 12, 2015.

Over 300 ‘first-timers’ to the state convention soon realized, that registering at the hotel is as much a family reunion as it is taking care of business! Sounds of joy came from the busy convention committee volunteers as they greeted CDA members and assisted them through the registration lines. It was like watching a sea of brilliant purple and yellow from the nine atrium levels as members surrounded the raffle, state sales, and vender’s displays; they were proudly boasting the colors of our order! Before the gavel dropped, over $4,000.00 was donated to Texas CDA State Projects and Charities Walk/Run Event.

At the biennial State Board VIP Luncheon, State Regent Peggy Rosales, Austin, expressed her sincere appreciation to First Vice National Regent Olga Samaniego, El Paso; National Director Carolyn Bachmann, Scotland; State Officers; State Chairmen; District Deputies; Clergy; the Convention Committee, and Past State Regents. With an ‘attitude of gratitude’ Rosales said, “it is a team effort to work with a state this big. I had the best state board! By the grace of God we have accomplished many things through Christ who strengthened us.”

Following a healthy meal, each state board member was presented a small gift of appreciation. Soon the state officers took control of the program with various presentations and gifts of gratitude for their State Regent, Peggy Rosales.

Presider, Most Reverend Bishop Joe S. Vasquez, Bishop of Austin with Auxiliary Bishop Most Reverend Daniel E. Garcia, CDA State Chaplain Reverend Donald Ruppert, JCDA State Chaplain Monsignor John Peters, nine (9) priests - local court chaplains and three (3) deacons – local court chaplains celebrated the Opening Mass in the Renaissance Grand Ballroom. In his homily, Bishop Vasquez said, “Peace be with you. Peace is promised the night before Christ’s death when He said, ‘My peace I leave you, freely given to you…, so let not your hearts be troubled…’ This peace is more profound than anything the world can give. It comes from our encounter with the Risen Lord, for it is here, at this altar, that we meet Christ and are made one. I applaud your choice of theme for this convention, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ for it exemplifies your focus on the person of Jesus Christ. Christ wants to be united with you.”

The congregation left Mass feeling like they had just celebrated Mass with a symphony choir; the Saint Mary Cathedral Choir, Austin! The Fourth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Louis J. Reicher #1099, Austin, served as honor guard. The five altar servers were also from Saint Mary Cathedral.

State Chairmen and District Deputies attended the following Committee Meetings: Rules, Timekeepers, Monitors, Resolutions/Bylaws, Credentials, Courtesy, Minutes Approval, Pages, and Elections.
