JCDA Spiritual Retreat – "To Jesus Through Mary"
June 9, 2012

Junior Catholic Daughters from across Texas gathered for the biennial Spiritual Retreat at the family ranch of JCDA State Chaplain Reverend John Peters in Weimar. Road trips to this retreat have become a tradition that our JCDA members from age six to eighteen look forward to. It is a time of rest and refreshment in God’s presence.

The state officers take some extra time making home-made cookies, from scratch! They stuffed bags for each retreatant including a certificate of attendance.

The spiritual retreat was hosted by Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas state chairman Terri Beltran, Chaplain Fr. John Peters and the JCDA state officers; Mary Adamek, State President; Katelyn Martinez, State 1st-Vice President; Jamie Ornelas, State 2nd Vice President; Holly Soukup, State Secretary; Allison Whitworth, State Reporter.

JCDA Courts Attending were: Sacred Heart #797, Hallettsville; St. Paul #1604, Shiner; Anna Poth #1178, Poth; Ancillae Mariae #1886, Crosby; St Theresa of Lisieux #2211, Sugarland; Immaculate Mary #2134, Angleton; St. Robert Bellarmine #2275, El Campo; Our Lady Queen of the Americas #2334, Lake Jackson; Queen of the Rosary #2368, McAllen; Our Lady of the Hills #2415, Round Rock; Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe #2426, Alice; Sacred Heart #829, West; Court Mary Queen of Peace #2497, Floresville.

Sharon Patek, Youth Minister Director, SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Shiner, presented a spirituality, hands-on exercise where the girls discussed the question “what would you do if your friend asked you to do something that made your uncomfortable” before taking their needs to the Blessed Mother Mary. The girls were divided up into two discussion groups, Juniorettes ages 6-10 and Juniors 11-18. The retreatants and their advisors prayed the "Magnificat", The Canticle of Mary, Luke 1:46-55, Salve Regina. Reverend John Peters, State JCDA Chaplain was the celebrant for Mass celebrated outdoor under his family pavilion.

Broken pieces of twigs became treasured crosses as the girls used rhinestones, rubies and ribbon as a reminder of the resurrection cross. They followed that up with making bracelets out of aluminum tabs and a Miraculous Medal.
